Chapter 1: Two Creatures

"Would you wake up?" my sister, Ariana, shouted as she shook me for the thousandth time. I rolled over on my side, not trying to be bothered by her impatient self. Shaking me again, I grasped her arm. "Ow!" Ariana screeched. She held her arm and stomped out the door, jerking it shut. I took the pillow off of my sweaty face and threw the covers off of myself. Getting up, I looked at my green alarm clock. 5:34 AM, it read. It was a Saturday, and my sister wakes me up this early?! I sniffed the circulating air. Pancakes, yuck. It was a summer day and it was hot and sticky, as always. I took a peek out my window and almost fell backward. The light was so bright and strong. I know I have been indoors for the past two days, but it was definitely not normal for it to be this bright.
I swapped my boxers and cami for an old pair of worn jeans and another cami like the one I was sleeping in. On top of the cami, I added a checkered blouse (not a fancy one, though). I walked across my wood floor and over to the door. Opening it, I checked if Ariana was in her room, across the hall. She wasn't, so I went to the steps leading downstairs. Sitting on top of the railing, I slid down. "Jersey! I told you to stop doing that," Mom warned for the thirteenth time.
"Sorry, Mom," I commented. She nodded and pointed to the kitchen where my brother, Miles, Ariana, and Dad were sitting down at the table. They were waiting for Mom and I, I thought to myself. I walked into the kitchen and plumped down on the chair between Miles and Dad. "So," Dad said, "who has what today? Jersey, you're going outside this time." He was talking about the farm chores. For the past two days, all of us kids got to relax because we just got off of school. Meanwhile, Dad and Mom did all of the chores. "I call...Um...Oh! I call milking the cows," Ariana excitedly mentioned.
"I got the fields," Miles said.
"I guess I get to muck out the horse stalls," I whispered. I loved horses, don't get me wrong, but cleaning their stalls was not the most fun job in the world. I guess neither was milking the cows or plowing the fields, though.
Walking outside, the screen door flew backward. I turned around and noticed it was just Ariana. "What?" she asked. I shook my head and walked toward the stalls. Opening the barn doors, I looked at the horses in their stalls. One, two, three, four, uh-oh. Of course, one of the horses escaped. And, of course, it was my horse, the one we just got from the wild. I didn't name him yet, yes him, but he sure was a beauty. With his multicolored mane and tail, his body was a shade of silver. He was still young, but he sure knew how to run and jump, that's for sure.
I walked out of the barn and towards the house. Knocking over the rocking chair sitting on the porch, I picked it up and walked inside. "Dad?" I shouted. "Mom?" There was no answer. Walking back outside, I called their names again. Not a sound. Of course, I still saw Miles on the plow and Ariana filling buckets of milk, but there was no sign of Mom and Dad. Both trucks were still in the driveway and all of the semis were there, too. I ran over to Ariana and the cows. "Do you know where Mom and Dad are?" I asked her. When she looked up at me, her eyes were glowing. Not in a mysterious way, either. It was like she was about to cry. "No, but I'll help you look," she answered. I nodded and took her arm. Running, we stopped Miles as he was just finishing. I mouthed 'Mom and Dad are missing', but he had no idea what I was trying to say. Shutting off the plow, he asked, "What?"
"Mom and Dad are missing." All three of us, Miles, Ariana, and I, made our way into the house. Miles picked up the phone but it was disconnected. It was just fine before we did our chores, I thought. We looked at each other. Where were our parents?
Ariana started pacing back and forth. "Relax, Ariana, I'm sure they're fine," I said, not believing a word. She stuck her hand in her pocket and whipped out her inhaler. Using it, she stopped pacing. She looked at Miles and I. We were both sitting on the couch. We've all been alone before, even by ourselves without each other, but never without knowing where Mom and Dad were. They could just be out at the store, I tried reassuring myself, I knew it wasn't working, though. Or, they could be dead. I decided to stop thinking about negatives and positives. "I have an idea! Why don't we just go look for them? Like, go to town?" I exclaimed.
"Mom and Dad would never allow us to do that," Ariana said.
"Mom and Dad aren't here, stupid," Miles argued. I looked at Ariana and then at Miles. Getting up, I motioned for them to both follow me. I stumbled out the door and got in one of Dad's trucks. Miles and Ariana trailed behind. Getting in the drivers seat, Miles hopped in. He was seventeen, I was twelve, and Ariana was eight. Nothing could go wrong...But, of course, something did. Coming out from behind a couple bushes, two interesting creatures sprung upwards.
They started scratching up against the truck. "Miles," I whispered, "roll up your window. Quick!" He did so, and just in time, too. One of the two creatures whacked his hand on the glass window. Ariana started freaking out again, and this time, Miles and I did, too. The faces on the two creatures looked vaguely familiar. But, why? It couldn't be Mom and Dad, could it? No, of course not. At least, I hoped not.
